SUU Students Design New Tours for Orientation
A Ground-Breaking Project by Natalia Rementilla and Kyra Payne
Cedar City, Utah, November 7, 2016 - Southern Utah University has seen its biggest freshman class to date. SUU’s orientation has been redesigned to be called Thunder U. Orientation leaders were getting feedback over the summer from new students expressing a fear of finding their classes. Two current students who love SUU and show their love by helping prospective students decided to create their own program within orientation that focuses on giving tours to students who want to find their classes.
These girls called their program Thunder U Tours. New students, whether they were nontraditional, internationals or just regular freshman coming right out of high school, were welcome to take the tours - anyone who wanted help finding their classes. These students walked up to the tour booth and pulled out their schedules. Natalia, Kyra, and Presidential Ambassadors who volunteered took these students to their actual classrooms and showed them other important resources like the Library, the Testing Center and the Writing Center. This tour was especially helpful when it came to the General Classroom building because this is one of the most confusing buildings on campus and yet it is common for freshman to have classes there. These tours helped fearful students who had nightmares of getting lost and being late on their first week of class become more comfortable. They were very thankful. This program could have awesome results at other colleges and universities, especially those that have huge and confusing campuses.
This project was created and implemented by two sophomores at SUU. Natalia Rementilla and Kyra Payne met through a leadership class and club. When they decided to do Thunder U Tours for SUU’s next orientation, they wanted to use it for their EDGE project. EDGE is a SUU program that gives the opportunity for students to create, plan, and follow through with an experiential project of their choice in order to help them reach personal or professional goals in their lives.
